Things to Do in and around Kuala Lumpur

Not in order of preference. The highlighted ones in green are specially organized by Christina & Michael for our guests.

1) Night Bazaar (Pasar Malam) - This open market is a traveling group of vendors who set up temporary stalls in different locations everyday of the week. We recommend the Old Klang Road and SS2 (Petaling Jaya) markets. Here you will find an interesting selection local dishes. These markets are not usually frequented by tourists. Prices here are already quiet reasonable and little bargaining is required. Going there usually takes longer as you go with the after work rush;

2) Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary – Includes Batu Caves, Selangor Pewter Factory, Deer Park. You will be able to feed, play, ride and swim with the elephants. We can help organize your trip either on your own or with other guests. Leave at about 8.30am and return at 5.30pm;

3) Fireflies Tour – Includes Malaysia Orchid farm (largest in Selangor), Eagle feeding / Bukit Malawati / Dutch Fortress to play with Silver Leaf monkeys, Seafood dinner by the riverside in Pasir Penampang, Kuala Selangor while watching the sunset and then taking a boat ride out to see fire flies. It's from 3pm to 10.30pm. This one is very interesting. We would highly recommend this;

4) Wet market tour – We organize walks to the largest market in the city. Eat a variety of local delicacies introduced by Christina. Visit a traditional Chinese medical hall and watch the Sinseh dispense herbal medicine. This is an off the track place where few tourists would get to go. 8.30am to 12 noon;

5) Cameron Highlands - Visit the tea plantations and have English Tea and scones. Flower and vegetable farms dot the highlands. Possible to do a day tour but rather tiring. Recommend that you stay at least one night there either in Brinchang or Tanah Rata and relax in 20 degree Celsius weather. Lots of interesting walking trails for the adventurous;

Monkeying around on Bukit Malawati. Friendly Silver Leaf monkeys

are the darlings of the hilltop.

Malawati Hill is located about a 1 1/2 hour drive from Kuala Lumpur. This is a popular tourist stop on the way to see the fireflies of Kuala Selangor. A typical journey starts from about 2pm and ends at about 11pm. Traveling westward to the Straits of Malacca one will experience the old country roads and the small towns by the way. The route would also take you past rubber and oil palm plantations which typifies the legacy of the British colonial administration in Malaya.

The tour will also take you to Pasir Penampang for the delicious and fresh seafood served while you overlook the river.

The journey will take any where between 45 mins to 1 hour depending on traffic.

Option 2 KLIA Express Train (ERL)
Operates from 5 am -1 am 7 days and departs every 15 minutes.
There are two rail links. Take the one which is the express and non-stop from KLIA to KL Sentral. The other which has about 5 stops along the way and takes about 10 mins longer.

This is the fastest way to the city but not necessarily the fastest to your final destination. Great for those staying at The KL Hilton or the Le Meridien though.

At KLIA airport when you exit from the arrival hall look for the KLIA Express sign in purple then proceed to take the lift to the ground floor. The fare is RM35 per adult and RM15 per child and the journey will take 28 mins to KL Sentral Station. 28 minutes is a very auspicious number for the Chinese. It means to prosper easily. You too may prosper when you take this ERL.
When traveling during the day you would get excellent views of he Malaysian countryside and as you are coming into the city you will pass by the backstreets of the outskirts, places that you would probably not have a chance to visit during your visit.

Arriving at Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT)
Option 1
Take a bus to KL Sentral Station for RM 8 / 9 per person. Any bus will do. They will leave when the bus is full. It departs every half hour from 7 am to 1.15 am although schedules can change without notice.
Be watchful of your luggage left in the storage compartment situated below the bus. I suggest you choose a seat on the side where they load and unload the luggages to make sure nobody takes yours by 'mistake'.
Counters for buses and taxis are located at the arrival hall or at the Starbucks end of the terminal.
Option 2
Take the airport taxi. The rates are listed and you don't have to haggle with the drivers over prices. Most of the taxis are of the national car - 1500 cc Proton Saga.

Budget Taxi - RM75 to Sarang Galloway. Takes up to 4 persons (3 comfortably) with min luggage.
Premier Taxi - RM110 & above (approx) This offers more legroom and a better ride.

Arriving at Puduraya Bus Terminal
Renovation at Puduraya is completed. It is now called Pudu Sentral to reflect the upgrade.
Most locals however still use the old name Puduraya.

If you are coming into Puduraya you may ask the bus driver to stop you directly in front of the Swiss Garden Hotel. From there it is a short walk of about 100 meters to our guest houses.

Arriving at KL Sentral Train Station
Taxis from KL Sentral operate on a fixed price system. You can buy a taxi coupon to No. 6 Jalan Galloway, 50150 Kuala Lumpur - behind Swiss Garden Hotel on Jalan Pudu for approx RM13. The ride should be about 15 minutes but depends on the time and traffic conditions. If you take any other taxis you should not pay more than RM15.

What an amazing sunrise!!

We had a couple of guests from Seattle, USA stay with us at Sarang Galloway last year. Jim and Jill Trott have kept in touch with us over the months and we have become long distance friends.

Recently Jill sent us a picture of the view from her classroom at sunrise which we found it to be quite breathless and we would like to share it with visitors to this blog.

Birds nesting in Sarang Galloway!!

Recently we were so surprised to find a bird's nest tucked away among the branches of a tree in the compound. Little did we expect birds to nest so close to the vacation home with all the guests coming and going. A pair of sparrows chose one of the trees in the verandah to raise their young.

We waited for the birds to hatch before going close to take pictures of the nest.

The birds have since flown the nest, free and wild.

Now we have two nests.

The word 'Sarang' means nest in Bahasa Malaysia. So if you are coming to Sarang Galloway for a visit don't forget to check out the bird's nest in the verandah.

Things to do in KL

A little known recreational facility: KLCC Playground & Park

Most people would associate KLCC with the Petronas Twin Towers and the Suria Shopping Centre. When they converted the old race course into a modern complex for shopping, conventions, hotels and office buildings the architects have retained a green belt which is now a playground and park for people to go and relax or exercise.

This is for everyone to enjoy and there's no entrance charge.

Wading Pool Opening Hours: Tuesday - Sunday 10 am to 6 pm
Park & Playground Opening Hours: 7 am to 9.30 pm

If you are coming from the shopping centre the park and playground is located behind the water fountain. It has a well planned jogging track that goes around the park. People start to gather there early in the morning to jog or brisk walk. The park is usually crowded during holidays and weekends.

Some 'Tai Chi' groups can be seen going through their routine of exercising inner strength using 'slow motion' movements handed down by ancient Chinese masters.

The best time to visit the park and playground is either early in the morning or after 5 pm when the sun is less strong. Of course, I am speaking as an Asian who is not particularly fond of the sun. The children would love it after a 'boring' day of shopping. You can laze around on the grassy slopes watching the children play and catch the sunset.

The playground is a thoughtfully laid out maze of swings, climbers, rope ladders, tunnels and all the kid's stuff which will keep the children enthralled for hours chasing one another or hiding from one another.

There's also a shallow wading pool children to play in. The water's no more than 18 inches at the deepest and it's a great way to cool off on a hot day. Come prepared with bathers and a towel for the kids to dry off. No matter how you make them promise not to get wet, children being who they are, will more often than not get themselves wet and probably in the process get you wet as well. So be warned!

KLCC Park and Playground is about a 10 minute drive from Sarang Galloway depending on traffic conditions. You can either park underground inside the shopping centre or next to the park. Alternatively you can take the monorail from the Hang Tuah Monorail Station (5 min walk from Sarang Galloway) and get off at the Jalan Ampang Station just in front of Concorde Hotel (Hard Rock Cafe) and walk 10 minutes along Jalan Ampang (one of the longest roads in Kuala Lumpur / Selangor) to KLCC. You will find the walk interesting as you would pass the Renaissance Hotel, New World Hotel, Malaysian Tourism Information Centre (MATIC), Lai Meng Chinese School, ZOUK discotheque complex and the Australian High Commission on Jln Yap Kwan Seng.

DONT'S

Avoid taking a taxi from the vicinity of KLCC. It's not worth the hassle as most of the taxis do not want to use their meters and even if they do most of the meters are not properly calibrated. Don't haggle with the drivers as they are extremely difficult to handle. Flag down a taxi only if you know the estimated fare to wherever you are going to. If unsure you can always ask the locals for their estimate of what the fare should be.

Bukit Bintang New Year's Eve Party!

We spent New Year's Eve with guests Andrew and Julianne Lehman and their children Jared, Covey and Nicole from Sunshine Coast, Australia. We had a simple chinese meal in one of the Chinese restaurants where the Lehmans tried claypot lamb stew, tapioca leaves, BBQ pork with salted fish, among other dishes. Then we strolled along the streets of Bukit Bintang while making our way to the KLCC Petronas Twin Towers for the fireworks display.

Bukit Bintang New Year's Eve Party!

Guests Andrew and Julianne Lehman and their 3 lovely children Jared, Covey and Nicole strolled along the streets of Bukit Bintang on the way to KLCC Petronas Twin Towers to catch the New Year's Eve Fireworks display.

We had to snake our way through the thousands of merrymakers that convened at the capital city for a night of fun and to usher in the new year. Year by year the numbers have increased to include out of towners, tourists from all over. Very soon it will gather the momentum to rival some of the bigger and more vibrant cities around the world that celebrate the new year.

Famed martial arts group from Singapore came to Kuala Lumpur attend the annual Malaysia's Batizado (graduation ceremony) and stayed with us. Capoeira, for those, like us who is unaware of this, is an incredible form of Brazilian martial arts. We were totally impressed with their style and routine.

Aside from Capoeira this talented group is also into samba. Although they claim that samba is only their side show they are great samba performers.

Vacation Home hosts Christina & Michael on holiday in Hanoi

Christina, Shen & women of the H'mong Tribe after a long trek up and down the rice terraces to Ta Van, Sapa Valley. The Black H'mong are the most progressive and skilful of the tribes. They will accompany visitors on their trek during the months when they are not tending to their rice fields. Most of them speak English quite well though they don't necessarily know how to read or write.

Michael & Mr Bang, owner of the Pink Floyd Restaurant & Pub in Sapa Town where we had a great meal of mountain goat steamboat, home-made honey flavoured rice wine and home-made snake wine. They met on the train from Hanoi to Lao Cai and became good friends over many cups of very strong Vietnamese coffee.

Christina, Shen & the effable Mrs Linh of Hanoi Guest House. We have become good friends since our previous visit to Hanoi in 2007 when we visited Ha Long Bay. She is a delightful host and always has a warm smile for everyone.

Michael & Mr Thinh and Hanoi Bia. Mr Thinh and his son (rowing the wooden boat at the back) own the boat which takes visitors to the Perfumed Pagoda. Mr Thinh is a good 80 years old on but still fit and healthy. He doesn't know a word of English and Michael doesn't know any Vietnamese but they got along just fine.

Trekking among the many tribal villages in Sapa Valley. Quite a task for city folks like us but we count this as definitely one of the more memorable holidays for us. The scenery is simply beautiful and you feel transported back to a place where time almost stood still.

There's more to life than just increasing its speed

Even hosts go on holiday every now and then. This year end we decided on Sapa Valley, a lovely hill station about 8 hours north by train from Hanoi city. Last year we were in Ha Long Bay and we chose to go trekking in the mountains to visit the hill tribes near the Vietnamese border to south China.

We experienced the wettest weather in Hanoi in the last 23 years. It is fortunate that we caught the tail end of the rains but we still have to endure a couple of very wet days in Hanoi before going on to Sapa Valley.

The views were breathtaking which made us forget about the slippery and treacherous trekking up and down the slopes of muddy rice terraces. Much of the valley is still unspoilt although Sapa town is developing rapidly due to the large influx of tourists.

I wish we have more people like you in this world

Dear Michael & Christina

I just want to thank you for all your warmth and hospitality and hard work during our stay with you and taking care of our family for the last 2 days of crisis (four from our group missed their flight back and none spoke any English) driving us around, and giving us a tour of the city.

You have left them with a feeling of joy and kindness which they will never forget for the rest of their lives and with a story they will rave about forever. I wish we have more people like you in this world.

In the whole month of my vacation the few days of my stay with you guys was the highlight of my trip.

If you ever plan to visit Vancouver please let me know so I can return at least 1% of the favor. God bless you. It is an honor to get to know you all.

We give Sarang Galloway a 5 out of 5 rating. Super convenient to everything: the Golden Triangle, amazing street cafes, shopping, the bus terminal, and the LRT. Christina & Michael are fabulous hosts. The rooms were clean and quiet, a welcome respite from the hubbub of the city just blocks away. Breakfast was a daily treat. We felt very much at home. For the first time visitor to Malaysia, we cannot imagine a better place to stay.

Congratulations Vick and Vanessa !!

CONGRATULATIONS! to our lovely Sarang Galloway guests Vick and Vanessa on their wedding in Kuala Lumpur in August 2008.

Vick brought along Vanessa's parents, family and friends from UK and French Reunion Island - all 14 of them, to stay at Sarang Galloway as they wanted to be together during the event. Christina & I had the pleasant task of hosting everyone.

To be honest, before they came we had no idea where French Reunion Island is! At least now we know. And in case you don't it is a rather large island (bigger than Singapore) next to the more famous Madagascar, just off the African continent.

The dashing Vick's a Malaysian and charming Vanessa's French. They both met in London, fell in love, Vick proposed in Langkawi, Vanessa said "Yes!" and later they decided to gather everyone in Kuala Lumpur for their religious wedding ceremony and wedding dinner.

After an elaborate religious ceremony in PJ, the lovely couple had a fabulous wedding dinner in one of the local 5-Star hotels for their relatives and close friends, some of them journeyed from all over the world to be at this event. It is one big reunion for everybody!

Christina & I had the priviledge to be invited for both the occassion and we thoroughly enjoyed it. One of the perks in operating a vacation home is that you get to make friends with people from all over the world.

We wish Vick & Vanessa a blessed union and much happiness back in Windsor, UK.

Low Yat Plaza - Bukit Bintang The best center for IT stuff n' such

Less than 10 minutes walk from Sarang Galloway you will find a haven for most, if not all your electronic needs. You will find all housed under one roof, hundreds of vendors selling the A - Z in electronics. All the big brands are there.

If you are not buying new you can get your own gadget repaired on the spot or at the most overnight.

Be prepared to spend at least 2 hours there once you step into the building if you have nothing specific to buy and you just want to browse. I have found that the best time to go would be at about 11 am on weekdays. The crowd is just about to come in and you don't have to jostle with literally thousands of other visitors. The vendors are probably more helpful since their stress level is still below critical.

And if you get hungry or you want a break from PC shopping there's a food court at the Lower Ground Floor offering both local and western dishes. Prices are reasonable.

Bargain! Bargain! Bargain! Bargain! Bargain!

When in Malaysia do what the locals do. BARGAIN! While not all the shops offer bargains most of the smaller ones would offer you a lower price when you counter with a lower price. The trick to getting a good deal is when offering your price do so with a reasonable offer. Ridiculously low counter offers shows insincerity and the vendors usually won't entertain you. The chances are you would get a good bargain if you show that you are a serious buyer and a reasonable price can be arrived at.

Even with the locals - practice makes perfect.

Low Yat Plaza's open 7 days a week including public holidays except for a couple of days for Chinese New Year.

Most tourists will put down Chinatown on their intinerary for KL drawn by the bright lights and the promise of cheap bargains. Few would come to know of the Chinatown wet market which is hidden away in between the old shophouses that line Petaling Street.

The wet market is situated on Madras Lane and is just off Petaling Street nowadays called Jalan Petaling. This is historically one of the first wet markets in Malaysia which has survived till today against the trend of airconditioned supermarkets. If you want to experience the sights and smells of a wet market which hasn't really changed much over the years this is a must visit site when you are in KL.

Here you will find fresh vegetables from Cameron Highlands, To Fu displayed in water to keep fresh, live chickens, eggs, live fish from the rivers, and an array of spices which gives Malaysian food its distinctive taste. See whether you can spot any century eggs while walking around the market. Give it a try. It has a unique taste and I especially like the yolk.
Here you will also find fresh Malaysian fruits like the solo papaya, pineapple from Sarawak, durian, banana, watermelon, honey dew, mangosteen, etc.

They are open 7 days a week and business will be done from the early hours of the morning until lunch time usually. There will be stalls open till later when they have not finished their selling.
If you go early enough in the morning you can also find an intersting breakfast spread of noodle and rice dishes. Locals going to work in Chinatown and nearby areas will usually stop over for a quick breakfast, read the local newspapers, perhaps catch up with friends before trotting off to work.

You may get a feel of old Kuala Lumpur while walking through the narrow lanes listening to the vendors yelling out their bargains after the morning rush. If you are on a self catering holiday visit the wet market in mid-morning and you may get some really good prices for your purchases. There's this particular fish seller located at the side entrance/exit facing the old Indian temple whom I use whenever we want really fresh seafood. You will find that his prices are reasonable and can be subject to bargaining.

Sarang Galloway is a lovely 2 storey terrace house originally built in the 1920s when Kuala Lumpur started to expand from its early beginnings in Petaling Street, also known as Chinatown. This is one of the few colonial houses still remaining in Kuala Lumpur in the midst of rapid urban development and has been tastefully furnished for your stay.

Do not feed the bogus monks!!

Travelers are prone to be sensitive to the religious practices of the country they visit. I am aware of that whenever we travel to another country, especially to Thailand where Buddhism is very much a way of life. I have often contributed to monks who solicit for food mainly in the form of rice in their morning rounds. As monks don't work for a living they usually depend on the goodwill of business people in their district for support and in return they bless their contributors with good health and fortune.

Buddhist monks make a life of denial to achieve the highest and purest form of existential living. Most choose to disassociate themselves from society which is full of greed and impurities in order to meditate their focus on being selfless. Their contribution to society therefore is measured by their mere presence - a constant reminder to the rest of us of being too caught up with trivial materialism, immoral living and selfishness.

Not so in Kuala Lumpur where Buddhism is not as institutionalized as in Thailand. Of late there is a growing (because it is so lucrative) number of bogus monks who focus their activity on approaching tourists walking around the KLCC and Bukit Bintang area. Their numbers are fast growing and they now expanded to 'sikus' (robed nuns) as well. My scanty observation puts the estimate of these predators in the region of twenty, with males slightly more than females. I am convinced that they all operate from a syndicate not unlike those who employ young street urchins to beg for money.

They look the part alright. Head clean shaven, yellow robed and extremely nimble they would appear out of nowhere to offer unsuspecting tourists worthless trinkets for a donation. Most of them would want you to write your details into a little booklet to give your act of generosity an air of authenticity.

Just like feeding monkeys around your neighbourhood. The more you feed them the more they will be encouraged and the more of their cousins they would bring. Nobody gets hurt no doubt. Most tourists would feel elated that they have done the temples a service as they would have contributed to inter-religious activity since Muslims, Christians, Hindus would be giving to Buddhist monks and nuns.

It is unfortunate that there are those would take advantage of the goodwill of others to feed their own greed.

So when you are in KL and walking around the KLCC and Bukit Bintang areas please remember not to feed the monks!! You would have done Buddhism a great injustice as you would have come away with the notion that Buddhist monks roam the streets to beg for money by selling trinkets. Bonafide Buddhist monks have better and more noble services to perform and they would be shocked and angry to know that those impersonating them can give them such negative publicity.

What to do?
1. When approached, refuse them and walk away quickly and definitely do not engage them in
conversation
2. Warn others!!

Remember: Do Not Feed the Bogus Monks!!!

For long distances every 1 km - 0.70 sen
Waiting / speed less than 20 kph - 0.10 sen every 45 seconds
3rd & 4th passenger - 0.20 sen each
Usage of boot space - RM 1.00 flat rate (driver has right to limit quantity)
Toll charges - According to tolls
On call - RM 2.00
12 midnight - 6 am - 50% surcharge

Going to the airports - Meter charge + RM12 + Toll charges

Rented out with a minimum of 2 rooms booking and opened on Feb'08 we are the only Vacation Home situated in the heart of Kuala Lumpur city centre. This is a double storey pre-war house built in the 1920's during colonial times. It is one of the few properties still standing in a neighbourhood where time has more or less stood still in the midst of rapid modernisation so common to all cities around the world.

This Malaysia Bed & Breakfast Vacation Home is spacious with a built-up area of 1800sq ft. The interior has recently been renovated to provide a comfortable, airy and cozy atmosphere while the facade has been retained as a heritage feature.

We are offering our home as an ideal place for families and those travelling in groups or those with young children, aged parents and therefore would like to have the whole unit to themselves.

Sarang Galloway has 4 bedrooms, 1 downstairs for those who don't wish to climb the stairs and 3 rooms upstairs. All the rooms upstairs are with windows. While the room downstairs have a king size bed, all those upstairs have twin super single beds fitted with comfortable mattresses, pillows, fresh linens, and quilts to ensure that you have a good night's sleep as if you are in your own bed. There are 2 bathrooms and two toilets.

The bathrooms come with hot water showers and bath gel. We even have a sun area where you can sun bathe in private. The kitchen is well equipped with 2 gas stoves, wok, pots, pans, utensils, refrigerator and a microwave oven.

Sarang Galloway is children friendly. A baby cot is provided free upon request. Baby sitting is available at a minimal charge. Our TV has multi channel satellite programmes and a good selection DVDs - movies and cartoons, available for your viewing pleasure. For those who like reading we have books, maps and brochures for the various attractions in Kuala Lumpur and other parts of Malaysia.

We live nearby and we are always on hand able to provide immediate attention and service if so needed. We provide housekeeping.
